Advantage of ICF #8: a longer-lasting home
Unfortunately, in Canada and the United States, many wood-framed homes are built very quickly, to minimum code standard and cheaply in order to make the highest profit for the builder.
These traditional wood-framed homes fail drastically compared to ICF homes.
ICF homes are built to stand the test of time.
Since an ICF home is built out of styrofoam and concrete, there is no organic material that will deteriorate over time.
This is especially important as factors such as moisture significantly increase deterioration on materials such as wood. Moisture and condensation are major problems that traditional wood-framed houses are facing today.
Concrete and styrofoam can sit in water without deteriorating.
As an example - many docks are made from Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) - which is what ICF blocks are made of. These docks are completely submerged in water, without molding or deteriorating.
When choosing whether to use Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) or traditional wood for your next build, it is important to ask:
How long do I want my home to last?
Do you want to build a project that will retain its value, require less maintenance, and be something your kids will be glad you invested in?
Then building with ICF is right for you!
Look at the buildings from Rome, or the medieval days, and you’ll see that the structures that still remain are those that were built with concrete or stone. They have stood the test of time.
So why not choose to build the same? Just with some extra ICF insulation to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer!
